MICRO MANIA HALTED BY CRASH; REMAINDER OF PROGRAM CANCELLED
Newmanstown, PA. - July 3 - With two laps complete in the 600cc C-Main, Jim Garrison was involved in a violent crash into the turn three guardrail during Saturday night's Micromania at Lanco's Clyde Martin Memorial Speedway.
Garrison's injuries were serious enough to warrant transportation to the Hershey Medical Center via the Life Lion helicopter. Reports from those who traveled to the hospital indicated that Garrison suffered broken bones in his face, along with a severe concussion. He was being taken into surgery in the early morning hours on Sunday, but doctors felt certain that he would make a full recovery.
After the crash, all of the drivers and car owners were called to a meeting, and the decision was made to cancel the remainder of the racing program. The drivers and owners unanimously voted to donate the entire purse, totaling more than $26,000, to the Garrison family. "That was the most incredible and classiest thing I've ever seen," stated Trip Kone, one of the PA 600 Speedweek organizers.
Since Micromania was also the final event of 600 Speedweek, it was decided to award 20 points to all of the drivers who signed in for competition at Clyde Martin. The cancellation meant that Heath Hehnly, Manheim, was crowned the champion of PA 600 Speedweek for 2010. Hehnly scored one victory during the week-long series, at Susquehanna Speedway Park, and won the title by just five points over Mike Rutherford. New Jersey's Jeff Hartman, Tyler Walton, and Eric Bodine completed the top five in the Speedweek point standings.
The Micromania entry list totaled 78, and 42 drivers signed in for competition in the 270cc Clash at the Clyde. Heat races for both classes had been completed before Garrison's incident in the 600cc C-Main halted the action.
The entire PA 600 Speedweek crew, the Lanco family, along with all of Saturday's competitors, wish Jim Garrison a full and speedy recovery,

HEATH HEHNLY WINS AT SUSKY
Manheim's Heath Hehnly added his name to the 2010 PA 600 Speedweek winner's list on Thursday at Susquehanna Speedway Park. Hehnly extended his lead in the Speedweek point chase by pacing all 20 laps of the non-stop A-Main. By virtue of scoring the most points in the dual-heat race format, Hehnly started on the pole and was never challenged as he won handily over A.J. Michael and Dwayne Gutshall. Tyler Walton crossed the line in fourth, and Jeff Hartman completed the top five.
"Well, it's definitely easier to win on a big track like this when you start up front," noted Hehnly, who now has Sonny Cooke's Hyper Racing/ Spar Engines No. 2c cemented as the favorite to win this year's 600 Speedweek Championship with just two events remaining to be run.
Susky Notes...a total of 57 cars signed in for competition on Thursday. Making their first starts of the week were Michigan's Charlie Warren, New York's Joseph Kata, and one of the biggest names in 600cc Micro-Sprints, Travis Senter from Arkansas. Senter blew an engine in warm-ups, then fell out of his first heat race with additional mechanical woes. He rebounded to win the C-Main before climbing into a qualifying spot in the B-Main. Senter finished 19th in the main event.
Blown engines were a topic of concern on the big SSP oval. Joining Senter as victims of expired motors were Jimmy Brookens, Brett Schoenly, Ryan Greth, and Indiana's Steve Russell.
Heat Race Winners in Round 1 were Shane Lewis, Jimmy Brookens, Brock Zearfoss, Ben McLeod and Mike Dicely. Heat Race Winners in Round 2 were Ryan Wilson, Tyler Ross, Tim Dietz, Heath Hehnly and Rick Stief. The C-main winner was Travis Senter and the B-main winner was Ryan Smith. |

TYLER WALTON WINS AT LINCOLN
Give round two to Mifflintown’s Tyler Walton. Walton started on the pole, spotted Ben Murphy the lead for the first six laps, then dove under the North Carolina driver to take the lead for good on the back stretch of lap seven. From there, Walton dominated the rest of the way, crossing one second in front of eventual second-place finisher Heath Hehnly.
"How about that!" exclaimed the happy Walton in victory lane, "Man, I needed to do this so much. After last night (when I spun out on my own), we were running sixth and I just lost it. I felt about ‘this big,’ I left everybody down...we’re running for points this week, and I just felt so bad. I told the guys, ‘Give me a chance tonight, I’ll pick myself up.’ I’ll tell you what, this is awesome!"
Hehnly caught Murphy for the runner-up spot on lap 14, and Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Jerrod Wilson passed Murphy for third on the final lap. Murphy settled for fourth, with Jimmy Brookens crossing fifth.
Sixth through tenth were Jeff Hartman, opening night winner and hard charger Robert Kendall coming from 22nd starting spot, Rick Stief, Mike Rutherford, and Shane Lewis.
The 78 600cc Micro Sprints ran two sets of heats, with passing points determining who qualified for the "A," "B," and "C" mains. Heats were won by Timothy Buckwalter, Ben McLeod, Tyler Walton (2), Ben Murphy (2), Mike Rutherford, Jesse Snyder, Ryan Smith, Stanley Fleming, Tim Dietz, Heath Hehnly, Ryan Greth, and Mike Dicely.
Brad Weber won the C-Main, while Brett Schoenly won the B-Main and then brought out the red with a flip during the "A" main. He was uninjured in the crash. |

ROBBIE KENDELL WINS AT TRAIL-WAY
Robbie Kendall continued his winning streak by claiming the opening race of Speedweek in the 25-lap 600cc Micro Sprint feature.
“He(Eric Bodine) was better than me, actually, but he slid up and I had to take advantage of it.” explained Kendall after climbing out of his George A. Falter Fundraising #55K and receiving many congratulations from family, friends and crew.
Polesitter Eric Bodine took the lead on the start and drove away from the 600cc Micro field. Timmy Buckwalter grabbed the second spot but was unable to catch Bodine. The top five cars, Bodine, Buckwalter, Mike Rutherford, Kendall and Jimmy Brookens were spread out and remained the same for 6 laps until the caution flew on lap 15 for Tyler Walton.
Another caution followed and during the caution, second place Timmy Buckwalter stopped on the track and was taken to the pits, ending his night. When the race resumed, Rutherford inherited the second position. Kendall got passed Rutherford before the completion of the 16th lap. Another caution slowed the field on lap 20, when Jesse Snyder stopped in turns three and four. On the restart, Kendall dove to the inside and slide under Bodine to take away the lead.
From that point on, Kendall never looked back, he claimed his second T-W win in a row by nearly a straight away over Bodine, who settled for second. Rutherford, Brookens, and Jeff Hartman rounded out the top five. Sixth through tenth were Heath Hehnly, Ryan Greth, 22nd-starting Ryan Smith, 27th-starting Isaac Sneeringer and Arron Spahr.
Eric Bodine accumulated the most points of the 73 600cc Micro Sprints in passing point qualifying. Isaac Sneeringer was the highest driver in Trail-Way points who did not qualify and was granted the 27th provisional starting spot. |
