LEWIS WINS MICRO MANIA AT LANCO & HARTMAN IS YOUR 2011 CHAMPION
Newmanstown, PA (7/2/2011) – It was only fitting that the final race of the 2011 PA 600 Speedweek came down to the final turns of the final lap before the winner was decided.
Honeybrook, PA chauffeur Shane Lewis held off a determined bid by Mike Rutherford to narrowly win the $3,000 Micromania event at Lanco's Clyde Martin Memorial Speedway on Saturday night.
An amazing field of 62 entered the 600cc Micromania event, with drivers from various parts of the U.S. and even Australia joining the best 600cc throttle-jockeys in the northeast.
A dual heat race format, utilizing a passing points system, was used to pare the field down to 26 cars that took the green in the 50-lap A-Main.
Lewis, by virtue of winning both his heat races and earning more qualifying points than anyone else, started on the Micromania pole. The Honeybrook Hustler blasted to the early lead over Ryan Wilson, as Mike Rutherford and Tim Buckwalter battled side-by-side for third position.
The first ten circuits were caution-free, but trouble loomed as Lewis and Wilson caught the back of the pack and began to put those cars a lap down. Australian pilot Ben McCleod appeared to slow and attempted to drop low on the track as Lewis and Wilson closed in on the backstretch. Lewis got by, but McCleod and Wilson got together, with both cars sliding to the infield. Both drivers were able to fire up and restart, but the yellow caused by their tangle put Wilson to the rear.
As the first half of the race clicked off in rapid fashion, Lewis controlled the pace. Rutherford finally slipped past Buckwalter for second on lap 18 and began his pursuit of the leader.
A "competition caution" slowed the field at the halfway point, as the mandatory fuel stop/adjustment period took place on the front stretch, in full view of the large and enthusiastic crowd.
With the halftime break completed, the green reappeared and Lewis bolted away from Rutherford. The racing behind the lead duo was intense, as Buckwalter, Ryan Smith, Brian Carber, Mike Dicely, Luke Thomas, Tyler Ross, Eric Bodine, and Oklahoman Chris Bell were swapping positions and trading slide jobs on one another at both ends of the race track. Carber, Dicely, Thomas, and Ross waged a furious four-car battle royale for the fifth spot over two-thirds of the distance.
As the laps dwindled and Lewis again closed in on lapped traffic, Rutherford sliced away at the gap between himself and the leader. Less than five revolutions remained when Rutherford pulled up to Lewis' rear bumper.
Lewis was firmly planted in the high groove, so Rutherford had no choice but to dive to the bottom and attempt to drive up in front of Lewis as they exited the corners. With the lapped car of Tony Dimattia directly in front of them, Lewis and Rutherford raced wheel to wheel through the turns, then Lewis would pull ahead slightly on the straightaways.
On the final tour, Rutherford pulled even in three and four, but Lewis had just enough speed left in his Baro Trucking, RAMM Trailers, Lewis Automotive, Hyper to squeeze out the victory over Rutherford by 0.136 seconds.
"The yellows definitely helped me throughout the race," stated the victor. "It seemed as though I'd get a yellow each time I closed in on lapped traffic. There at the end, though, I wasn't sure which lane to pick to try and get around the No. 5D. I didn't want to choose the wrong lane and let Mike get by me."
"The car was awesome tonight, and I've got to credit the car and the engine, which is a combination of Spar and my dad," explained Lewis, the Penn State engineering student who was co-champion of the 2009 PA 600 Speedweek series.
"I should have gone to the bottom earlier," noted Rutherford, "but Shane deserves this; he drove a great race. He was really good on restarts and just drove away from us. Gary and Rose Hunter gave me a great car, though, and I'm happy with second."
Buckwalter wound up third, with Smith and Carber completing the top five.
Jeff Hartman had to qualify through the B-Main, then started 25th in the 50-lap A-Main. He persevered to finish tenth, clinching the PA 600 Speedweek Championship by 21 points over Buckwalter. (Story by: Barry Angstadt)

WALTON VICTORIOUS AT LINDA'S
Jonestown, PA (7/1/2011) – Tyler Walton of Mifflintown, PA makes it two in a row with the win at Linda's Speedway in Race #5.
The field on the night was made up of 56 600cc micro sprints, the largest field so far in the 2011 series. After 2 rounds of 5 qualifing heat races, there was a 4-way tie for the most points between Tyler Ross, Chris Bell, Ryan Wilson, and Tyler Walton. A pill draw broke the tie, moving Walton to the pole followed by Wilson, Ross and Bell. The draw ended up being worth $1,000 and Walton collected it after a hard fought A-main victory. Chris Bell came within feet of passing Walton on the last lap, but couldn't catch the 14t and settled for second. Tyler Ross, Jeff Hartman and Ryan Wilson rounded out the top five. Brett Schoenly, Mike Rutherford, Robbie Kendall, Mike Dicely and Brian Carber finished 6th through 10th. (Story by: PA 600 Speedweek)

WALTON TAMES SUSQUEHANNA
Newberrytown, PA (6/30/2011) – Tyler Walton of Mifflintown, PA was hooked up in qualifying and maintained the same speed in the A-main as he claimed Race #4 and the $2,000 prize at Susquehanna Speedway Park.
Only 27 cars registered on the night, which was the lowest turnout in speedweek history. That didn't take away from any of the excitement in the hard fought 7 caution A-main.Walton was challenged by the 026 of Jeff Hartman all night and on the last restart of the night with 3 to go it looked like the 026 was going to pass Walton for the lead, but Hartman just couldn't make it stick as the 14T of Walton drove away to take the 20 lap feature win. Jeff Hartman finished second, followed by Shane Lewis in third. Dwayne Gutshall and Kenny Edkin rounded out the top five. Jimmy Brookens, Brett Schoenly, Tim Buckwalter, Robbie Kendall and West Australia's Ben McLoud finished 6th through 10th. (Story by: PA 600 Speedweek)

GRETH GOES WIRE TO WIRE AT PATH
Spring Run, PA (6/27/2011) – Simply put, it was Ryan Greth's night.
Greth, from New Cumberland, Pa., scored the most points in qualifying...thereby earning the right to start the 30-lap A-Main from the pole position.
He made the most of his opportunity, too, leading every trip around the ultra-fast, super smooth oval to win Monday night's PA 600 Speedweek feature at Path Valley Raceway Park.
Driving Wayne Lesher's Hyper/NPS Racing Engines No. 1J and fresh off a racing weekend in Illinois, Greth jumped out to a comfortable advantage as the green waved over the stellar 26-car field.
Robbie Kendall and Eric Bodine battled for the runner-up spot, and were soon joined by Texas' Tyson Hall . The first yellow flag appeared with ten laps complete for a spin by Brian Carber.
On the restart, Hall shot the gap between Kendall and Bodine to grab second as the trio throttled off turn two.
Brock Zearfoss started seventh, fell out of the top ten in the early going, then surged back to run fifth by the halfway point.
The final caution proved to be an anxious moment for Greth, as Kenny Edkin and Luke Thomas tangled and spun right in front of the race leader in turn two with 19 laps completed. Greth was able to maneuver around the incident without being involved.
Even though Hall was on his rear bumper for the restart, Greth rocketed to another healthy lead on the restart as Kendall, Bodine, and Zearfoss engaged in an entertaining battle for third.
Greth waltzed to the checkered, with Hall a distant second. Zearfoss snatched third from Bodine with six to go, and Kendall finished fifth.
The victory was worth $2,000 to Greth, but the close call with eleven to go made him realize how quickly that payday could have evaporated.
"Yeah, that was interesting," is how Greth described the Edkin-Thomas incident. "Those guys were racing hard, too, and that stuff happens sometimes. But I definitely got lucky there...not sure how I missed them."
Notes from Path...Monday's 43-car field at Path Valley was bolstered by the addition of several competitors, both local and national standouts, who had been at the big race in Illinois last weekend.
Eric Bodine also returned after his trek to the midwest for the $10,000 to win show. Chris Bell, who captured the big money in Illinois, also came east along with Oklahoma's Billy Lawhead and Texas' Tyson Hall. Bell finished seventh at Path Valley, while Lawhead suffered mechanical ills in the dual heat races and did not qualify.
Australia's Ben McLeod is back for a second attempt at PA 600 Speedweek, and he brought a buddy with him. Aussie Jason Pryde is also taking part in this season's mini-series. (Story by: Barry Angstadt)

HARTMAN CLAIMS LINCOLN VICTORY
Abbottstown, PA (6/26/2011) – It was a perfect night for Flagtown, New Jersey’s Jeff Hartman in Sunday night’s PA 600cc Micro-Sprint Speedweek show at Lincoln Speedway.
Hartman, who finished second to Mike Rutherford in the Speedweek opener on Saturday at Trail-Way Speedway, won both of his qualifying events and the 30-lap feature, moving him into the Speedweek points lead.
Hartman started on the pole and led the first lap before yielding to fourth-starting Brock Zearfoss on turns three and four of the second lap. But then Zearfoss pulled up lame exiting turn four of the sixth lap, turning the lead back over to Hartman. Hartman led the rest of the way, despite heavy late-race pressure from seventh-starting Mike Dicely, who drove around Jim Young for the runner-up spot on a 26th-lap restart.
The micros ran most of the race in a light drizzle, which Hartman was hoping to use to his advantage.
"The inside was starting to get slick, and I was hoping the #44 wouldn’t get me," said Hartman in victory lane, "NPS Racing Engines was nice enough to give me an engine for this week, so I want to thank them."
Dicely, who pulled alongside Hartman several times over the last three laps, but had to settle for second, with Young, Ryan Smith, and Brett Schoenly rounding out the top five. Sixth through tenth were Kenny Edkin, Tyler Ross (who came from 20th starting spot), A.J. Michael, Heath Hehnly, and Robbie Kendall.
An opening lap crash took the out the cars of Jake Murphy, Tim Dietz, Luke Thomas, Chad Thomas, Travis Scott, CJ Tracy, and Tony Stilo. Although they were all done for the night, there were no injuries.
Tony DiMattia won the "C" main, and Tyler Ross took the "B" main for the 51 micro-sprints on hand. (Story by: Lincoln Speedway)

RUTHERFORD WINS OPENING RACE
Hanover, PA (6/25/11) – Opening night of the 600 PA Speedweek at Trail-Way Speedway brought 49 600cc Micro Sprints to the McSherrystown oval.
Mike Rutherford started on the pole after accumulating the most passing points (221 points) in the double heat format of the sprint bandit qualifying.
After several cautions and double file restarts, Tim Buckwalter finally led the first lap of the 25-lap feature. Buckwalter earned the second most points and started outside the front row. Buckwalter led the first 20 laps before Rutherford made his race-winning pass.
Rutherford fell to third when the feature finally got underway. Rutherford took his machine to the inside of AJ Michael to take the second spot on lap eleven. Rutherford then closed on Buckwalter.
“I knew we were gonna get a run, but I didn’t know if it was gonna stick out of turn two.” said Rutherford after exiting his Hunter Racing owned and Carstar sponsored #7H in victory lane, “I thought if I tried to make a few passes to the inside to get [Buckwalter] to protect the bottom and then go to the top. And it worked.”
Rutherford drove to the outside of Buckwalter down the frontstretch and made the pass stick as the pair raced through the first and second turns of lap 21. The next lap, Jeff Hartman passed Buckwalter for the runner-up spot.
Buckwalter crossed third with Michael, and Trail-Way points leader Tim Dietz completing the top five. Sixth through tenth were Shane Lewis, defending Speedweek Champion Heath Hehnly, Kevin Steele, Brock Zearfoss, and Australian Ben McLeod. (Story by: Trail-way Speedway)
